If I have austinetic SS (300 family such as 303 or 304) I can make an educated guess based on appearance and lack of magnetic attraction (unless of course it has been cold work hardened). If I have martensitic SS - 400 family - I am limited to a guess based on appearance. Feb 25, 2020 · So at my work everynow and then we have to weld monel 400 to 316 stainless. The problem is that this combination likes to heat crack. We use either nickel 99 or iconel 82. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
